Poor mental health undermines educational attainment”

“3 children in every class suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder!”

According to the charity YOUNG MINDS: Emotional Health and Wellbeing is one of the strongest determinants of an individual’s health; it fundamentally affects behaviour, social cohesion, social inclusion and prosperity.

FACT Children who:

  • suffer extreme stress
  • have been traumatised
  • experience the loss of close family member/s

Are more likely to:

  • Underachieve (ATTAINMENT)
  • Withdraw (ATTENDANCE)
  • Act out (BEHAVIOUR)

Learning outcomes

  • You will look at child development and the age ranges particular presentations might happen typically
  • You will look at the Healthy Child Mental Health Framework
  • You will look at the main types of mental health needs in your school and the presentations; what you might see, hear, what the child/YP may have as a diagnosis behind it or the range of diagnosis
  • You will have the knowledge to know what you can do to support the child/YP’s well-being and when they might need referring on
  • You will know when a red flag concern presents
  • You will be introduced to a range of tools to help you identify S.E.M.H. difficulties
  • You will know how to manage a child who presents with a S.E.M.H. concern and may appear un teachable


  • You will look at what national organisations are offering in terms of online help and advice,
  • You will look at what provision is available locally to help promote positive mental health
